THE MISSISSAUGA THUNDERING HERD

                             THUNDERING HERD YOUTH ASSOCIATION

                                    ORGANIZATIONAL  PROFILE

The Mississauga teams of Thundering Herd Football are operated under the auspices of the              Thundering Herd Youth Association.

Conceptual roots of the THYA were first planted during a 1980’s youth program, when some like-minded volunteers shared their mutual, longtime interests for community involvement. This brief interaction initiated a public service concept that would provide a support package of skills and expertise. An especially-tailored service was created to supplement existing youth programs or to develop new youth-oriented projects. The main objectives were to encourage friendship, fun & goodwill through recreation, positive learning experiences & citizenship.

The operation of the “Broncos” minor football team during the mid ‘90’s, multiplied into a variety of additional experiences – leading to the expression of ”a herd of thundering youth” For purposes of project identification, a descriptive nickname was then assigned to each function undertaken. Names of various horses were used – which ideally depicted and symbolized the high-spirited energy of our different activities. This thinking naturally evolved to “Thundering Herd Youth” as a structural group name for the overall operation.

The THYA is not officially affiliated with any particular religious faith, cultural group, political cause or government agency. Its efforts are on behalf of all youth; regardless of origin, race, creed, gender, or religious beliefs. Functioning as a not-for-profit operation, programs are essentially self-funded through affordable activity fees & fundraising efforts. Added support is gratefully received from local service groups, plus the business & corporate community.

To attain designated goals, knowledgeable and enthusiastic leaders are assembled...specific to the project needs. Their mandate is to provide the relevant skill or ability to instruct, guide, coach, train, teach, tutor, motivate, mentor, or counsel youth. A high leader-to-participant ratio increases specialization opportunities, which has always been a well received feature. To add reinforcement to this program element, THYA instituted a L-in-T or C-in-T element where former participants or players are provided opportunity to volunteer alongside more seasoned leaders to gain practical knowledge, and to develop their own instructional skills. Theoretical/clinical training and accreditation opportunities, are also encouraged.

The initiatives and accomplishments of THYA are indebted to the collective contributions of these numerous dedicated volunteers. Since inception, this commitment has allowed thousands of youthful participants to experience many diverse activities & events.

Some of our leaders have long-involvement and deep roots in the sport of football, including all aspects of coaching and team management. Accordingly, our Thundering Herd Football Clinics began back in the mid 90’s, but the more recent years have seen additional emphasis being placed in the organization of various sports activities & recreational events. This has included both Developmental & Rep football programs, as well as the fundamental football clinics.  Although Mississauga-based, the Thundering Herd has been supportive with football assistance for a variety of community teams, clinics, camps, and school programs, throughout the GTA, and beyond.
